Immediate Denture Placement

Immediate denture placement is when you have dentures made prior to having your teeth removed and then the dentures are placed in your mouth by the oral surgeon after your teeth are extracted.  My dentist advised me to wait a full three months before even having an impression of my gums made for the dentures he would be making for me.  He advised that it would take that long for the gums to completely heal and return to their normal, pre-surgery, size and condition.  But, after talking to friends and other denture wearers, I decided to take a different course and have my dentures made prior and placed in my mouth at the time of the surgery.  Everyone said this was the only way to go.  And I wouldn’t have to go without teeth (a vanity issue)! BIG MISTAKE!!!!  I would never advise anyone to have dentures immediately placed in their mouth after surgery.  First, they tell you to leave your dentures in 24 hours a day, only taking them out to clean your mouth.  Day and night, 24 hours a day.  This is no easy task as they DO NOT fit.  You end up being forced to use dental adhesive which is a gummy mess inside a mouth with open sockets.  Yuck! Some people honestly believe that leaving your dentures in 24 hours a day when you first get them is so your gums will conform to the denture.  Trust me!  This is NOT going to happen!  You will find yourself with a paring knife and emery board filing and shaving off denture material to try to find a comfort zone.  Next, I found out that the dentures, as they are now, are actually unfinished.  It may require up to 5 linings placed inside before they will fit me, up to 6 months time.  These linings are made by taking impressions of your gums over a period of time and then “lining” the denture with it. On top of all of this, no one bothers to tell you that you may have exposed bone or tooth fragments that have to work themselves out of the gums.  Not all people have this but guess what, I did, of course.  It is difficult to put an ill-fitting denture onto gums that have bone or tooth fragments in them.  They rub on the dentures.  It may require the dentist removing the fragment
